2008 ALUMNI KICK A** at METROCAF! At this year's MetroCAF, our 2008 alumni had huge success - a total of eighteen out of thirty films were from SVA, thirteen of which were from our department! The following films screened the evening of September 25th at FIT's Haft Auditorium: "Lilium Urbanus" by Anca Risca & Joji Tsuruga ** Both David Han and Eric Huang's films won Jury Recognitions, the highest award of this festival. MetroCAF is an annual, juried competition produced by NYC ACM SIGGRAPH. It features the best student work from the NYC metropolitan region in the areas of computer animation, visualization, and special effects. Their selection has won them a live television broadcast on the Nicktoons Network (check your local cable or satellite television provider for channel info). These films have been selected and will air at the following times: "Alien Abduction" by David Han - October 1st @ 11pm The Nicktoons Network Animation Festival, back for its 5th year, is the first ever multi-platform festival featuring the best animated shorts (10 minutes and under) from around the globe. Prize winners will be announced during the exclusive live event for creators in Los Angeles on October 3rd. These films, along with the other selected films, will also be featured online where viewers can vote (GO VOTE) on their favorite shorts. A new short will air each night in October at 11pm, at which time that short will also be available for online viewing and voting. One of our current Juniors, Dillon McCarthy, is participating in MTV's Engine Room challenge. MTV and HP have teamed up to bring four teams of digital artists from around the world to New York City to compete in a series of creative challenges. Dillon is one of four members of team North America, competing against teams from Asia Pacific, Europe, and Latin America. The teams will work their way through a series of creative challenges that will be featured here www.mtvengineroom.com where you can also view the latest webisode covering their progress. 2008 ALUM TO SCREEN AT THE SAN DIEGO ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL - October, 2008 2008 Alum David Han's film "Alien Abduction" will screen three times at this year's San Diego Asian Film Festival as part of their Shorts Program. This is annual event of the San Diego Asian Film Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the diverse Pan Asian experience through the media arts. The festival will be taking place in San Diego October 9th through the 16th and in Riverside October 21st through the 23rd. 2008 Alum Nick Carroll's film "Rock N' Roll King of the Southwest: The Bobby Fuller Story" has been selected to screen at this year's 8th Coney Island Film Festival on Sunday, September 28th. The festival screens a truly eclectic range of films from the U.S. and all over the world and much to the delight of our audience features a number of "made in Coney Island" productions each year. Four films by 2008 alumni have been selected as semi-finalists in this year's Adobe Design Achievement Awards: "Macabre Muse" by Dan Devine and "Drop Shot of Doom" by Rich Pernice and Maxim Kornev in the Live Action category; "Ryde" by Ryan DeCarlo and "Cest La Vie" by Mike Milyavsky in the Animation category. Three films by 2007 alumni have been accepted at this year's Woods Hole Film Festival in the town of Woods Hole, Massachusetts. "Office Mobius" by Seung Il Hwang and Seung Hyung Lee, "The Big Upgrade" by James Dick and Ryan Moran, and "A Faery's Tale" by Sylvia Apostol will be screening during the week of July 26th through August 2nd. "The 17th Woods Hole Film Festival is an eight day showcase of independent film featuring daily screenings, workshops, panel discussions, staged readings, special events, parties, awards ceremony and more. Since its inception in 2003, MetroCAF has provided an exciting opportunity for all students in the NYC metropolitan area to gain international exposure for their computer-generated imagery and make contacts within the NYC-area computer graphics community. NYC ACM SIGGRAPH is a non-profit, professional computer graphics organization serving the greater New York City area. Every year our graduating seniors submit their films to this festival and every year they have great success. Last year six of our seniors' films screened at MetroCAF, two of which received Jury Recognitions, and ten senior films were featured the year before that. This year, thirteen of the seniors of 2008 are included in the festival. The film "A Faery's Tale" by Sylvia Apostol, one of our 2007 alumni, has been selected for the international competition section of the 2008 Tricky Women Animation Film Festival. Awards will be announced during the festival which will run March 27th - 30th, 2008. Organized by Culture2Culture, Tricky Women is the first and only animation festival dedicated exclusively to female animation filmmakers. The 15th Stuttgart International Festival of Animated Film will be screening "Fish" by Hyun Jeen Lee and Jun Sik Na, two of our 2007 alumni. The festival will be running May 1st through the 6th in Stuttgart, Germany. "With over 50,000 visitors to cinemas in Stuttgart and Ludwigsburg and to the open-air even on Stuttgart's main square 'Schlossplatz' as well as 1,000 professionals, the festival is one of the largest events for animated film worldwide." All the first place winning films will be screened on November 5th in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Begun as a collegiate competition in 1989, the festival had immediate success and soon became an international competition to include films by high school filmmakers as well. The Visual Effects Society will announce the awards on February 10th in Los Angeles. 2007 ALUMNI GIVEN EXCLUSIVE SCREENING AT BIG APPLE FILM FESTIVAL - November 17th The Best of 2007 BFA Computer Art student films have been accepted by the Big Apple Film Festival, which will be running November 14th - 17th at the Tribeca Cinemas in New York City. On Saturday the 17th there will be a special program, designed to include all eighteen Best of 2007 films, which will then be followed by a panel discussion as described below: This year the Big Apple Film Festival will offer a panel discussion entitled, “Film Distribution in the New Age”. The panel will focus on new outlets available to filmmakers in the 21st century to distribute and market independent films. The discussion will include information on the current trends available in the area of digital distribution, the future of independent film distribution through online, on demand and digital cable outlets and how to utilize online resources most effectively to market content, through websites such as YouTube and MySpace. Based in Rome, Italy, Cortitalia also organizes the International Animation Film Festival of Potenza (PIAFF) where these films have already been accepted (see below). 2006 ALUMNUS PART OF THE FLIP ANIMATION FESTIVAL The Flip Animation Festival has chosen three films by 2006 BFA Computer Art alumni to be screened this October. Flip is the Midland’s only animation festival, and aims to promote the best in regional, national and international animation. Although the 2006 Fesrival only marks the third anniversary for Flip, it is distinguishing itself by showcasing unique and exciting artists from across the globe, including David Shrigley and the Brothers McLeod, as well as SVA graduates Josh Greer, Min-ha Lee, and Wing Luo. 2005 ALUMNUS PART OF THE AARHUS FFESTIVAL OF INDEPENDENT ARTS The Aarhus Festival of Independent Arts (AFIA) has selected seven animated films by BFA Computer Art graduates to screen in Denmark next month. As part of the international short film competition, the SVA alumni films will be shown alongside works from an international array of artists demonstrating quality, innovation and vision in the film medium. An international jury will award the best films at the end of the festival. 2006 ALUMNUS PART OF THE CHILEAN INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL We are pleased to announce that the Chilean International Short Film Festival has selected 2006 BFA Computer Art alumnus Rodrigo de la Parra’s film, Beginnings. to screen as part of its 14th annual program. The festival, organized by the Arcos Cultural Corporation, was started in order to bridge the gap between the academic and artistic sides of production and the public sphere, and is one of the leading short film festivals in Latin America. CLASS OF 2006 FEATURED AND HONORED IN METROCAF 2006 Films by Computer Art students from the School of Visual Arts once again dominated the MetroCaf festival this year, including ten films by BFA Computer Art alumni. MetroCaf 2006, the fourth annual Metropolitan Area College Computer Animation Festival, is organized by the New York based AMC SIGGRAPH, an organization devoted to excellence in the Computer Graphics field. The following BFA alumni were featured in this year’s festival, gaining them international exposure for their films: Eric Wagner Catherine Yoo’s film, Scary Pink, also received the MetroCaf 2006 Juror’s Award for Art Direction.
2006 ALUMNUS NABS PRIZES AT THE TAIWAN INTERNTATIONAL ANIMATION FESTIVAL Kitty Lin, a 2006 BFA Computer Art Alumnus, has won the Technical Arts Gold Prize and the Proton Creative Gold Prize in the Taiwan International Animation Festival. Kitty will be awarded $3,000 and a 42 inch LCD monitor for her short animated film, The Sky Bar. The Taiwan International Animation Festival draws an audience of 30,000 people each year and presents cutting edge animated work from across the globe. 2006 ALUMNUS FEATURED IN THE NEW YORK TELEVISION FESTIVAL The Calderons, a film by BFA Computer Art alumnus Dan McNamara, is a finalist in the New York Television Festival and has been nominated for Best Comedy Pilot, an Audience Award, and the Grand Prize. McNamara’s film will be part of the Festival’s screening program at the Directors Guild Theater on September 16th at 2:45 pm. CLASS OF 2006 FEATURED IN THE KROK INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL The Krok International Film Festival has selected two animated films by BFA Computer Art graduates to screen in Moscow this month. The Clown, by Wing Luo, has been entered in the official competition, and The Sky Bar, by Kitty Lin wil be screened as part of the Panorama presentation. The Krok festival invites qualified jury from all over the world includoing France, Russia, Belgium, Ukraine, Holland, Poland, Belorussia, Czech Republic and others. CLASS OF 2005 FEATURED IN THE BERMUDA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL The Bermuda International Film Festival’s Kids Film Festival has invited five animated films by BFA Computer Art graduates to screen this October as part of the Twisted Toons Teenscreen program. SVA COMPUTER ART NOMINATED FOR STUDENT ACADEMY AWARDS The BFA Computer Art Department is pleased to announce that three films by the class of 2005 alumni are regional finalists for the Student Academy Awards. Only 7 films were selected as finalists in the animation category. Abridged, by Joshua Harvey and Mats Andersson, Eternity, by Travis Griggs and Ylli Orana, and Betty, by Rie Ito, will be a part of the regional finals to be held on Tuesday, April 27th at the Lighthouse Theater in Manhattan. A distinguished panel of judges will choose up to three animated student films to advance to the national finals. Winners of the National Student Academy Awards will be announced on June 11th at the National Academy Theater in Los Angeles.
ALUMNIS FEATURED IN BROOKLYN ARTS COUNCIL INTERNATIONAL FILM AND VIDEO FESTIVAL Three films from the BFA Computer Art Department class of 2005 were part of the Brooklyn Arts Council International Film and Video Festival. CLASS OF 2005 FEATURED IN THE RED STICK ANIMATION FESTIVAL Ten short animated films by BFA Computer Art alumni have been selected to screen at the Red Stick Animation Festival (RSAF) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The RSAF, which takes place from April 20th to the 23rd, focuses on the worlds of technology, art and entertainment, disciplines that were once isolated from each other but are now converging in the 21st century. The RSAF highlights artists working with the medium of animation who are addressing this convergence through their craft. 2003 ALUMNUS NOMINATED BY THE VISUAL EFFECTS SOCEITY FOR SECOND CONSECUTIVE YEAR For the second consecutive year, John Han (BFA CA, 2003) has been nominated by the Visual Effects Society for his work on the UPN television series, SMALLVILLE. John is currently leading the VFX team working at Sony ImageWorks on the feature film, Superman Returns.
